da Vinci Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is da Vinci Robotic Surgery?

The da Vinci Robotic Surgery system is a type of surgical procedure which employs the use of robotic arms and guided instruments to perform a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. The da Vinci System provides doctors with a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and small-wristed instruments which rotate and bend much more than the human hand is capable of. The procedure lets the surgeon operate with enhanced precision, vision, and control. The da Vinci technology uses the surgeon’s hand movements to guide the instruments which translate them to smaller, precise movements. The system is powered by robotic technology which employs laparoscopic instruments known as trochars. A laparoscope is used to send live images to a video monitor which guide the doctor’s movements during surgery.

Who is the Procedure Meant for?

For those who medicine or lifestyle changes have not helped their colorectal condition, this surgery can be a good option. Colorectal conditions treated include:

  • Diverticulitis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Colon Cancer
  • Rectal Cancer

Surgery to remove all or part of the colon, or a colectomy, and rectal cancer surgery to remove part or all or the rectum can be done using open surgery which requires one large incision or they can be performed laparoscopically. Laparoscopy is minimally invasive surgery and this surgery is robotic-assisted when using the da Vinci system.

What Can I Expect After Surgery?

Minimally-invasive techniques such as the laparoscopic da Vinci system will require a shorter duration of recovery time. Depending in the type of surgery performed, patients can experience some discomfort at the incision sites and possibly internally. This can be managed with medication. For more information about the procedure and whether it will be right for you, contact the office to schedule a consultation with the doctor.
