At his practice, Dr. Lyass assists patients with becoming healthier and more active by utilizing revolutionary techniques such as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. Patients throughout the Los Angeles area can receive care from a leading gastric surgeon at one of the three locations: Glendale, Beverly Hills and Marina del Rey.
This surgical procedure is a tool used to assist patients with losing weight and is placed during a minimally-invasive, laparoscopic procedure. The most common type of this surgery is known as the Lap-Band® system. The system shrinks a patient’s stomach volume, which in turn lessens the amount of food a patient is able to consume in a single meal. This makes patients to feel fuller faster and remain full for a greater duration of time. The system was created to help patients slowly lose weight over time and maintain the weight loss once it is achieved.
The procedure is performed using the laparoscopic technique. Laparoscopic surgery utilizes a system of small cameras and instruments inserted through long, thin trochars to operate. This minimizes recovery time and only a few small incisions are required. Using the laparoscope to view inside the patient’s abdominal cavity, the surgeon places the band around the patient’s stomach. The surgery traditionally takes approximately one hour and patients can typically resume to their normal activities in about one week. Once the band has been placed, adjustments are made easily through the access port which is located just beneath the skin. By changing the levels of silicon in the band’s pouches, the doctor can either create more room in the stomach or shrink the size further down.
The procedure is best for people who:
